November is National Native American Heritage Month, so we’re highlighting our Native-owned member stores!

If you’re near any of these amazing stores this month, stop in and check them out!

Minneapolis and St. Paul have one of the largest concentrations of urban Native people in the United States. Birchbark Books provides a focus for Indigenous intellectual life. We are Native-owned (Louise Erdrich is an enrolled Turtle Mountain Chippewa) and provide a space to uplift and celebrate Native authors and artists. Our store carries an array of books for all readers by Indigenous authors, with countless handwritten staff recommendations throughout the store, providing a diverse range of topics to consider.

In addition to selling books, we also carry jewelry, plant medicines, and food offered by Native-owned businesses. We work directly with local, regional, and southwestern artisans, and stock traditional hand made objects. We also carry locally sourced wild rice, which is available seasonally and is harvest-dependent, and we also work with local water and land protectors and artists to protect the environment.

We are proud to support and celebrate Indigenous authors, artists, and activists, and provide a safe, welcoming place for everyone to come and learn more through literature.

We are a community meeting place where readers come together, discover new ideas, new books, and celebrate their local community. We serve as a literacy showcase for Oklahoma Authors by hosting book signings monthly, and we hold children’s story time twice a month.
