Here’s what’s happening this week in the book industry:

On November 1, the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA) will launch its Shop Indie Local holiday campaign, encouraging individuals and businesses to shift their holiday shopping, entertaining, and dining to locally owned and independent businesses. Sixty business alliances and networks throughout North America will kick off the campaign, which continues through December.

Anthology announced the transition of ownership to long-time employees David Luick and Thomas Maule who have a combined work experience of over 45 years in the bookselling and software industries and have held various managerial positions within Anthology. 

American Writers Museum's newest exhibit, My America: Immigrant and Refugee Writers Today, explores the influence of modern immigrant and refugee writing on U.S. culture, history, and daily lives. The exhibit opens November 21, 2019, and runs through May 2021.

Penguin Young Readers will acquire Eric Carle LLC, the asset holder of the rights for the iconic picture book author/illustrator Eric Carle.The deal includes the global publishing rights to his more than 70 children’s books, along with the Eric Carle licensing business, and is expected to close on January 1, 2020. 

IPG has started distribution services for eight new publishers including Health Administration Press, distributed by the Academic and Professional program since October 1; G2 Entertainment, Indigo Press, and Scandinavia House Publishing, distributed by Trafalgar Square Publishing since October 1; Dram Good Books distributed by Midpoint Trade Books since October 1; and Royal Collins Publishing Group, distributed by IPG Art since October 1. In addiiton, Elva Resa Publishing and Vesuvian Media Group have been distributed by the IPG line since September 1Wacky Bee Books, Duckbill Books, and Trigger Publishing will be distributed by Trafalgar Square Press starting January 2020. 
 
Two Lines Press will launch Calico in March 2020. The new collectible book series will publish works of translated literature that are curated around a particular theme, region, language, historical moment, or style. 

Penguin Random House U.S. Chief Operating Officer Nihar Malaviya has been promoted to president from executive vice president, and Annette Danek has been promoted from senior vice president to executive vice president, supply chain.

Rachel Bressler has joined Harlequin Trade Publishing as vice president and associate publisher of adult books, a newly created role.

Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill publisher Elisabeth Scharlatt will retire on December 1 after 30 years at the company. She will be succeeded by Betsy Gleick, who joined Algonquin in 2016 as editorial director.

The Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals (CILIP)  has announced the nominations for the 2020 Carnegie Medal and Kate Greenaway Medal. The longlist will be announced on February 20.

The shortlist has been revealed for the 2019 Waterstones Book of the Year. Nominated by booksellers, the finalists will be announced November 27. The winning title will receive the full support of Waterstones.

Booksellers have selected the finalists for the 2020 Southern Book Prize. Nominations were submitted by bookstore members of the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance (SIBA) and chosen from 2019 books that are Southern in nature and received strong reviews from Southern booksellers.
