There are some notable online sales trends surfacing for bookstores in the lead up to the holiday season.

Over the past 22 days, online traffic to IndieCommerce and IndieLite websites has been increasing dramatically when compared to the same period last year.

Based on 2021 sales data from 570 IndieCommerce and IndieLite websites, these independent bookstores averaged a 387% increase in their online sales revenue when compared to pre-Covid 2019 sales.

The pattern is similar to 2019, but the big differences are that 2021 holiday traffic is 100% higher and those customers are completing more online purchases. If the return to an old traffic pattern turns out to also be the “new normal,” this is very encouraging for online bookselling in 2022.
