October 21 is the deadline for booksellers to apply for the new award; two winners will receive a full scholarship to Winter Institute 2020 in Baltimore, covering up to five hotel nights, travel costs, and a $1,000 stipend.

To be eligible for a 2019 National Book Award, a book must have been written by a U.S. citizen and published in the United States between December 1, 2018, and November 30, 2019.
