Learn About Managing Staff in the Age of COVID at Winter Institute
- By Emily Behnke
On Saturday, February 20, Winter Institute attendees are invited to join a session called “New Labor Laws and Best Practices in the Time of COVID.”
Booksellers will hear from John Kelly, senior HR consultant for Pinnacle Human Resources, and Rose Miller, president of Pinnacle Human Resources. During this session, Kelly will discuss best practices for managing staff in the age of COVID. He will also hold an open discussion about the challenges booksellers are facing while managing remote workers. Miller will join him to provide an overview of navigating federal and state laws and how they may interact and overlap with your own leave policies.
In addition, Kelly will speak to the importance of your employee manual and how to incorporate these changes into it. He will also offer an employee manual template for those just getting started.
“My passion for this area stems from the employee relations and counseling background that I have,” Kelly told Bookselling This Week. “The laws and working environment can cause a lot of anxiety and misunderstanding on what's fair versus what’s legal. My goal is to alleviate as much of the ambiguities as possible.”
Booksellers are invited to submit questions for select Wi16 sessions, including this session on managing staff, ahead of time. Please submit your questions by this coming Friday, January 29.
The 2021 Winter Institute will be held virtually from Thursday, February 18, through Saturday, February 20, and registration is open now. The full Wi16 schedule can be found here. Questions about the event can be sent to [email protected].
