Scholarships

Stores that did not have a Children’s Institute scholarship winner in 2017 or 2018 are eligible to apply; scholarships cover the conference fee, airfare or ground transportation up to $400, and three hotel nights.

A number of additional scholarships to the 2019 Winter Institute have been awarded to ABA member booksellers.

ABA is committed to awarding a number of 2019 Children’s Institute scholarships to booksellers from diverse backgrounds. All applications to next year’s event in Pittsburgh are due December 4, 2018.

The year-long scholarship will send one bookseller to ABA’s 2019 Winter Institute and their region’s 2019 fall trade show as well as provide $1,000 to start a community outreach program through the store.

Bookselling Without Borders, a scholarship program for booksellers that aims to make the American book market more welcoming to international voices, just kicked off its 2019 crowdfunding campaign.

Booksellers at stores that did not have an ABC Children’s Institute scholarship winner in 2017 or 2018 can now apply for a scholarship to the 2019 Children’s Institute in Pittsburgh.

The scholarship aims to expose U.S. booksellers to the global book industry to equip them “to become advocates for international and diverse literature in their own stores,” said Europa Editions’ Michael Reynolds.

Scholarships will cover the conference fee; up to four nights plus tax at a hotel in the ABA block; and transportation costs up to $400 for the January 22–25 event in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

To ensure every bookseller has the opportunity to apply for a scholarship to the 2019 Winter Institute, ABA has extended the application deadline to July 15.

The program, sponsored by the Book Industry Charitable Foundation and Macmillan Publishers, offers $500 for a bookseller from a traditionally underrepresented group in the industry to attend their regional show; nine winners will be chosen.
